Welcome to Open Streets SLC! You have found the Nature on Main Scavenger Hunt.

Here, we ask you to identify an aspect of nature along Main Street and answer a question about it that relates to the natural history of the Wasatch Front. Stops are numbered north to south, but you can start anywhere. Answer as many questions as you like. At the end of the Scavenger Hunt, go to the City Creek Center activity hub to learn more and find fun activities!

Stop 3: The city and the hills

Look north up Main Street and you can see a mountain between the downtown skyscrapers.

Downtown Salt Lake City is unique for its views of mountains visible from both buildings and streets. To the east, down 200 South, you can see the ridge leading to Mt. Wire above Red Butte Canyon. To the south, the Traverse Mountains rise above Draper, mirroring the Salt Lake City foothills. Few other cities have such a dynamic visual interplay between the city and mountains.

The peak you see to the north is one of the westernmost of the Wasatch Foothills that surround Salt Lake City. It has historical significance: On July 26, 1847, Brigham Young and pioneers climbed it to survey and plan the land for the new city.
